The Diamond Clarity Guide: What You Should Really Look For

For centuries, diamonds have been cherished not only for their rarity and radiance but for what they represent — love, commitment, strength, and timeless beauty. At Klarity, we believe that the diamond you choose should reflect not only your style but your story. That’s why we focus so closely on clarity, ensuring every stone we offer is more than just beautiful — it’s exceptionally crafted to shine without compromise.

What Is Diamond Clarity?

Diamond clarity refers to the presence (or absence) of natural imperfections inside the stone (inclusions) and on its surface (blemishes). These imperfections occur naturally as diamonds form deep within the Earth over billions of years. They’re part of the diamond’s unique fingerprint — tiny reminders of its ancient origin.

Some inclusions are so small they can only be seen under a microscope. Others may affect how light passes through the diamond, influencing how much it sparkles. That’s why clarity matters — it influences both beauty and brilliance.

At Klarity, our focus is on choosing diamonds that are eye-clean — stones that, to the naked eye, appear flawless even if under 10x magnification they may have minute inclusions. Why? Because what matters most is how the diamond looks, feels, and performs in real life — not under a jeweler’s loupe.

The GIA Clarity Scale: Breaking It Down

To make sense of clarity, the Gemological Institute of America (GIA) developed a standardized clarity grading scale that is now used worldwide. Here’s a closer look at what each grade really means — and what it might mean for your jewelry choice.

  • FL – Flawless
  • No inclusions or blemishes visible under 10x magnification. Less than 1% of diamonds worldwide are graded as Flawless. These diamonds are incredibly rare — and often extremely expensive.

  • IF – Internally Flawless
  • No internal inclusions, only very minor surface blemishes. To the eye, these diamonds appear perfect. They’re a great option for those who value perfection without going all the way to FL.

  • VVS1 & VVS2 – Very, Very Slightly Included
  • These diamonds have minuscule inclusions that are extremely hard to detect even under magnification. They strike a strong balance between beauty and value — and are highly sought after by collectors and connoisseurs.

  • VS1 & VS2 – Very Slightly Included
  • Inclusions are small and not visible to the naked eye. These diamonds often appear flawless and offer a superb balance of price and visual clarity — making them one of Klarity’s top recommendations.

  • SI1 & SI2 – Slightly Included
  • Inclusions may be visible under magnification and, depending on the stone’s size and cut, might be faintly visible without a loupe. These stones can still be stunning — especially when the inclusions are positioned in inconspicuous areas.

  • I1, I2, I3 – Included
  • These diamonds have noticeable inclusions that can affect their transparency, brilliance, and overall durability. Klarity does not recommend these for fine jewelry.

Clarity vs. Cut — What Matters More?

This is a common question, and the answer is clear: cut often matters more than clarity when it comes to a diamond’s visual performance. A well-cut diamond can reflect light so efficiently that it disguises minor inclusions. On the other hand, a flawless diamond with a poor cut can appear dull and lifeless.

At Klarity, we prioritize balance. A beautifully cut VS1 or VS2 diamond may offer more brilliance and better value than a Flawless one that’s poorly proportioned.

What We Want You to Remember

Diamond clarity is important — but don’t let it overwhelm your buying journey. Trust your eye, trust the sparkle, and most importantly, trust your heart. A diamond doesn’t have to be flawless to be perfect for you.

Our team at Klarity is here to walk with you, whether you’re exploring engagement rings, custom jewelry, or a personal milestone piece. We’ll help you understand every clarity grade, explain every inclusion if you wish, and ensure you walk away with a diamond you’re proud to wear or gift.

Because to us, clarity is more than just a grade — it’s the way we do business. blogs
